About the play:
Aneemah’s Spot: the Base is
a stylistic mix told using stealthy dialogue, rhyme and spoken word.
The funeral of “G” brings Aneemah and Wan together to mourn and share
their histories, as they are forced to let go of the past and choose how
they will navigate life, either apart or together from this moment on.
In the hours following the funeral, Aneemah and Wan struggle with G’s
untimely death and the violence that surrounds the tragedy, their
personal insecurities and questions that arise, and the secrets that
they expose to one another.
Character Breakdown
Wan: Young Black Man 22-25yrs
Wan
is an aspiring hip-hop artist, who is the last standing of his crew,
who are all either in prison or in the ground. He is street-wise and
contemplative.
He has grown up in Toronto. His emcee style is all about front, but his
slick beats/production work shows that he is deeply in love with his
music.
Aneemah: Young Black woman 23-26 yrs
Aneemah is in the first year of college and is a childhood friend of
both Wan and G. She is a fighter but chooses her battles and ammunition
haphazardly.
She
has been around the “crew” from back in the day. While time and
circumstance has drifted the crew apart, Aneemah has anchors herself in
writing and rhymes; to find her true voice behind her tough exterior.
